Dr. Dan Hayden •

One word from you is all I need. No excuses, no ifs, ands, or buts. Just say the word and it’s done.

Say, did you know that that is just the way it is with Jesus’ governance of the universe? All He has to do is say the word and it’s done. Hebrews 1:3 says, “He upholds all things by the word of His power.”

Now this is not the general word for “word” in the New Testament—“logos.” It is the word for a specific utterance—rima. He gives a command, and it’s done. He issues an order—and that’s what happens.

This is the same word used in Hebrews 11:3 when it says, “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God.” He said, “Let there be light” and there was light—He simply spoke and it was done.

Now in Hebrews 1:3, the idea is that He maintains the universe in the same way that He created it. He upholds it by the word of His power. Like a jet pilot at the controls of a sophisticated jet aircraft. He decides to push a button, or flip a switch, or pull a lever, and the plane does whatever he tells it to do. He’s in control and his word is that plane’s command. That’s Jesus at the controls of the universe. He maintains it by the word of His power.

Say—are you sensitive to His word? Do you do what He tells you to do?
