A master of ceremonies ties everything together and keeps things moving. Well, the Bible says that Jesus is the Master of the universe. He ties everything together and He keeps things moving.
Have you ever wondered how everything in the universe runs so smoothly? The planets revolving around the sun—the moons revolving around the planets—the earth spinning on its axis, tilting toward and away from the sun to give us summer and winter. It’s all rather amazing, isn’t it? Like a find-tuned watch. Well, in Hebrews 1:3 it says that Jesus, the Son of God “upholds all things by the word of His power.” He upholds all things.
Now that’s a word that means “to bear, or carry,” and it includes the idea of maintaining something, not just supporting it like a burden.
In classic Greek mythology, the god Atlas, who was the Titan son of Iapetus, was condemned to support the world in his shoulders. His punishment was to have to uphold a great burden forever. Now that’s not what the Bible is saying concerning Jesus. He’s not upholding things as though they were a burden. He’s maintaining the continuity and movement of the universe. He’s overseeing the intricate balance of matter and time and space. He is guiding the universe to its divinely ordained destiny. He upholds all things.
Say—if Jesus can do that for the whole universe, don’t you think He can also do it for your life?
