Dr. Dan Hayden •

When our son played sports in high school, he was given the nickname “weasel”. Now that’s a tough little tenacious animal, so I was pretty proud of that nickname. Then one day I asked his best friend why it was they called my son “weasel.” “Oh,” he said, “It’s because he has asthma – and he wheezes!”

In Isaiah 9:6, there is a prophecy of Jesus which says, “For a child will be born to us, a son will be given to us…And His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.”

A person’s name is an important part of their identity. Usually much thought is given by parents in the naming of their children, because names are important.

W.A. Criswell, in his study on the names of Christ from both the Old Testament and the New Testament said, “There are 256 names for Jesus in the Bible – all expressions of His infinite worth and marvelous life.”

I once saw a promotional video on how diamond cutters cut the facets of a diamond. They take precise measurements, and they make careful calculations – and then they cut each facet to expose the inner beauty and perfections of the diamond. Even so, our Lord’s “Name” is a marvelous diamond, with 256 facets – all combining to radiate and expose the brilliance of His exquisite perfections. So, what are some of the facets of His name? Well, Isaiah says, “…His name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.”

Say – how many facets of the name of Jesus do you know?
