“Wow! What’s holding you together? You should have fallen apart by now.” Her answer was sincere and confident, “Well,” she said, “It’s the Lord. He’s holding me together.”

The Lord is certainly a very present help in time of trouble to hold His people together. But actually, He holds together a lot more than that. The Bible says that He holds together the entire universe. In Colossians 1:17 it says (speaking of Jesus), “And He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together.”

“Hold together” is a word that literally means “to stand with.” It is the Greek verb, “to stand,” with the preposition “with, or together” attached to the front of it. In other words, in Christ all things adhere or stick together. All things have their union or cohesiveness as a result of His involvement in the universe.

I have known ministries that were built around a strong personality. The presence of that person held it together. Then, when the person died, the ministry simply collapsed. Can you imagine if Christ were to step away from His creation and not be involved anymore? According to this verse, everything would fall apart. All of the material elements that comprise our wold system would disintegrate. There would be nothing left but chaos.

Listen, Christ is not aloof. He’s involved—not only as Creator, but also as our redeemer, He holds all things together.

Say—what’s holding you together? Do you know the sustaining work of Christ?
