Eastern religions, the New Age movement, and Mormonism all have something in common. They all believe that a man can become a god. But biblical Christianity is exactly the opposite. The Bible teaches that God became a man.
When the Bible talks about a New World Order, which it calls “the Kingdom Age,” it says that the ruler will be the virgin-born child who is the divine Son of God, with the ability and resources to bring peace and prosperity to the world. In Isaiah 9:6 it says that His name will be “Mighty God” – El gibbor.
Gibbor is the Hebrew word for “mighty,” and El is the shortened form of Elohim, the name of God used in Genesis 1:1, where it says, “In the beginning [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth.”
Isaiah is saying that a child would be born whose name would be “Mighty Elohim.” In other words, the child would be the Creator of the universe—Elohim in human flesh!
Earlier in Isaiah 7:14 Isaiah told how this would happen. He said, “Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, a virgin will be with child and bear a son, and she will call his name Immanuel.” Now Immanuel means “God with us.” Immanu means “with us,” and El is again the shortened form of Elohim. The child will be “Elohim with us.” That’s why Isaiah says in chapter 9, verse 6, that His name will be “Mighty God” or Mighty Elohim.
Say – as you worship Jesus this Christmas, remember – He is Mighty Elohim – the Creator of the universe!
