God didn’t say “Here are Ten Commandments—pick the ones you like.” God expects us to obey every last one of them.
We like options so we can make choices. Burger King advertises, “Have it your way.” Varieties and choices are the spice of 21st Century American life. But there is one area where God doesn’t give us options. It’s in the area of obeying the law.
In I Peter 2:13 God says, “…submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority, whether the King or the Governor….”
“Every” is an all-inclusive word. It’s the Greek word “pas” or “pan,” and refers to the whole thing in terms of each and every part.
You see, we don’t get to choose which laws we like and which ones we don’t like, in terms of our obedience. We are to obey every one.
Now when it comes to our moral and spiritual accountability to God, His laws always supercede man’s laws. But we’ve got to be careful here. Government doesn’t have the right to tell you what to believe concerning Christ, but it does have the right to tell you that you cannot pass out tracts on the street corner. Government doesn’t have the right to tell you that you have to abort your baby. But it does have the right to tell you that you can’t destroy other people’s property…even if it is an abortion clinic. If it’s not immoral or contrary to spiritual conscience in religious matters, you have to obey it! – every human authority.
So—be careful how you vote. God will expect you to obey whoever is in authority—each and every one.
