Are you afraid of the dark? Well, darkness itself cannot hurt you – only things in the dark can hurt you. Darkness is merely the absence of light. Today, let’s consider the word, darkness.
When God created the heavens and the earth (or space and matter), everything originally was in the dark. Genesis 1:1-2 says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. And the earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep.” Some have said that God, being light, could not create a world in darkness. But that is not correct. Isaiah 45:7 is a verse in which God Himself is speaking: “I form the light, and create darkness.”
The word “darkness” in our Genesis passage is a word that simply means “the absence of light.” Darkness has no properties or qualities of its own. It is merely the absence of things. So, originally the earth lacked three things: It was without form (there was an absence shape or form); it was void (there was an absence of life); and it was dark (there was an absence of energy or light).
You see, the physical universe, though created, had not yet been energized (light is a form of energy). The earth was in an elemental state. There was no form, no life, and no energy.
I remember sitting in an auditorium waiting for a play to start. We were sitting in the dark, but suddenly the spotlights glared. The curtain went up, and the play started. There was energy and motion and life. Well, that is what happened at the creation. At first everything was dark. Then God said, “Let there be light,” and everything was energized. The darkness was dispelled by the Light.
Now you know the real meaning of the word.
Hey – When Christ enters your heart, He dispels the spiritual darkness. He is the light of the world, you know.
