Darkness cannot quench the light. Now matter how dark it gets, the light keeps burning. But light can dispel darkness! Strike a match or burn a candle in total darkness and the darkness goes away. Think about it!

In Ephesians 6:12 it says that we “wrestle against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” Literally the text says, “against the world rulers of this darkness.”

The word for “darkness” here refers to that which is “dim and obscure.” It comes from a root word that means “shadow,” and has the idea of being devoid of light – hence, to be dark. Now darkness in the Bible represents all that is contrary to God. So, what we have here are spiritual forces that are base, and evil, and committed to wickedness.

America will never forget September 11, 2001, when Islamic terrorists hijacked four airplanes and drove three of them into the Twin Towers of New York as well as the Pentagon in Washington. The next day on September 12, the headline on the front page of the Orlando Sentinel echoed the thoughts of all Americans. It read, “Today, Our Nation Saw Evil.” This day has gone down in the annals of history as a day of unspeakable evil. Well, that infamous day just illustrates the fact that we do “wrestle against the rulers of the darkness of this world.” Not just the spiritual forces behind the occult and witchcraft, but the forces of evil that plague our world and threaten to consume us.

There is a lot of evil out there – just listen to the evening news. But the Gospel of Christ can make a difference! Through consistent prayer and courageous witness for Christ, we can effectively “wrestle against the rulers of the darkness of this world.”

Hey – Remember the song, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine”? Well, don’t just sing it – DO IT!
