Counseling is a major ministry in the twenty-first Century church, and popular counselors are so busy it’s hard to even get an appointment. But there’s a 24 hour counseling service that is absolutely wonderful, and I’m anxious to tell you about it.
Isaiah the Prophet tells us in Isaiah 9:6 that Jesus’ name is “Wonderful Counselor.” Literally he says that Jesus is a “counseling wonder.”
People really are desperate these days to find a good counselor. Did you hear the story about the man who went to the psychiatrist and said, “Hey, Doc – people think I’m crazy because I like potato pancakes.” The psychiatrist said, “That’s not crazy. I like potato pancakes, too.” “You do?” the man replied, “That’s great! Why don’t you come over to my house – I’ve got closets and closets full!” People really do need counsel these days.
This word “counselor” is actually the participle form of the Hebrew word ya’az, which means, “to advise; to admonish; to counsel.” In other words, if you need someone to advise you or give you counsel, then Jesus is wonderful! Paul tells us in Colossians 2:3 that “In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
So where do you go to get His counsel? Well, His counsel is in His Word. The Psalmist said, “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” Actually, the counsel He gives in His Word is amazing! It’s perceptive – it’s effective – and it’s available twenty-four hours a day. Listen. There’s no counsel that can compare to the counsel of Jesus Christ in His Word. Isaiah says He is a “Counseling Wonder”
Say – where do you go when you need counsel? If you’re smart, you go to the Word of God.
