Pure water is big business in our society. Whether it is home purifiers or bottled water, we pay a lot of money these days to make sure our water is pure.
When the Bible says that God is Holy, it is saying that He is pure. There are no impurities in God. He is purity taken to perfection. In Isaiah 57:15 Isaiah says,
For thus saith the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also who is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.
Twice in this verse it says that God is Holy. Isaiah says that God’s name is Holy and that God’s place is Holy.
The word Holy is a Hebrew word that means pure or sacred. It carries the idea that God is free from any defect or fault, but it also has the positive notion that God is perfect in righteousness. It is not only that nothing is wrong with God, it is also that everything is right with God. The apostle John put it this way in 1 John 1:5, He said
God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.
It was Lord Kelvin the British scientist who discovered how cold cold could get. He discovered that at -273°C all molecular movement stopped; it was the ultimate cold. So he called it not absolute zero, but zero absolute.You see, God is not just absolutely Holy – He is holiness absolute. God’s name is Holy.
Now you know the real meaning of the word.
God has to make us holy in Christ if we are going to live with Him in his Holy Place. Think about it.
